The Salty Sow was a restaurant I had been hearing a lot of great things about, so we decided to give it a try. Its slogan is “swine + wine + beer” and it lived up to that and more.
We went for an early dinner a couple of weeks ago on a Friday evening and the place was already quite packed and vibrant. It is located just off of the intersection of Cactus and Tatum, so it is easy to get to. There is a large room with a bar in the middle, plus some outdoor patio seating to the left. We had reservations and were seated promptly at an elevated booth in the back near the open kitchen.
Our server was really friendly and walked us through the menu options and the specials. We opted to try several different things since so many menu items looked delicious.
We started with the Triple Fried Duck Fat Fries, which came in a bowl with a soft egg and a side of béarnaise sauce to dip them in. They were decadent and very tasty.
From there we tried the Chef’s Crudo, which changes daily. That night, the crudo special was scallops with avocado and grapefruit. The dish was bright and wonderful and a nice counter to the richness of the fries we had just enjoyed.
To finish out the meal, we split a couple of dishes. The first was the PV Salad, which was a large serving of fresh mixed greens, chicken, avocado, blue cheese, hard-boiled egg, bacon and almonds. It was a great choice. The other was the Salty Sow Charcuterie & Cheese Board, which is another menu item that changes daily. This was outstanding as far as the variety and quality of the offerings. On that evening, it came with smoked salmon and crème fraiche, chicken liver pate, a cheese selection and two meat selections. To accompany the items were there large, crusty pieces of toasted bread. As someone who likes to sample a lot of things versus ordering a single item, this was a fantastic option and we were very happy we ordered it. Needless to say, we had quite a bit to eat as well as some leftovers to take home.
Overall, we really enjoyed our meal at the Salty Sow. The food was very tasty, it was a fun and lively atmosphere and service was prompt and friendly. We will be back again for sure.
